Here are 10 simple changes you can make in your life that will have a significant impact on our environment as suggested by Clean Ocean Action.
~10 Tips for Daily Living~
- Reduce, reuse and recycle. Avoid using disposable items such as plastic straws, bags, cups, water bottles, and utensils. Use re0usable items. Recycle as much as possible.
- Conserve the drops. To save water. On average, each American uses between 80-100 gallons of water daily.Turn off the water while brushing your teeth, take shorter showers, use low-flow faucets and showerheads. Turn washing machine “load size” down a notch and choose a car wash that recycles water.
- Flip the switch to save energy. Turn off your lights and appliances when not in use. Unplug your phone chargers and appliances, which use energy even when they are not in use.
- Don’t be idle. Turn off your car when idling for more than 30 seconds. This will conserve fuel, save money, and reduce pollution. Use your best judgment when sitting in traffic.
- Swap bulbs and replace inefficient items in your home. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) or light-emitting diodes (LED). Check www.earth911.org for more info and safe CFL disposal options. Buy “Energy Star” appliances.
- Personal Care products such as shampoo, deodorant, cosmetics, perfume, chap stick/lip sticks, and lotions contain many chemicals that can be hazardous to the environment when they enter the watershed. Use products that are based on plant oils, colors derived from natural preservatives such as titanium dioxide, and fragrance from essential oils and natural preservatives such as Vitamin C and E. Avoid soaps and lotions that contain microbeads and triclosan.
- Shop wisely. Purchase environmentally responsible products, such as those made from recycled materials, non-toxic cleaners, and products with minimal packaging. Purchase bleach-free toilet paper made with post-consumer recycled materials. Write manufacturers and retailers to applaud or condemn them or their environmentalism.
- Stash the trash responsibly. Never litter. If away from home, bring garbage/ recyclables home for proper disposal. Make sure outdoor trash cans are securely converted so trash doesn’t blow away.
- Get involved. Attend town meetings and discuss your concerns with your local elected officials. Write to your elected officials about your environmental concerns. Join an environmental organization.
- Spread the word and educate family, friends, neighbors and co-workers about how they can improve daily habits to protect our environment. Together, we are the solution.
Our Habitat is Down the Drain!
Nonpoint source or pointless pollution is the #1 cause of coastal water pollution. This pollution has many sources, including the stormwater runoff that carries litter, pet waste, fertilizers, pesticides, soil, and waste from leaky sewage systems into waterways. Every time it rains polluted stormwater travels to the nearest storm drain or waterbody that ultimately drains to the ocean. Though people and their everyday habits are often the source of pollution, we can easily become the solution. By making small changes we can make our ocean fishable, swimmable, and healthy.

be here now
Be present during your daily activities. Reconnect with your body and let go of any tension, pain or blockages you may have.
focus
The more you can focus your attention and energy on what you are doing, the more effective the results.
visualize
The more intensely you can see or visualize what you want to happen in your life, the more you will experience and manifest the results. Visualize healing, relaxing, etc.
affirm
Be positive. Believe in what you are doing. When you doubt, you block yourself.
diet
Eat a variety of live, wholesome and fresh foods. Take care in the preparation and combination of your choices. Reduce your intake of white flour, sugar, fried and processed foods. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins. (Check with your physician if you have any health concerns.)
air and breath
Breath is the rhythm of consciousness and generates life. Breathe fresh, clean outdoor air every day. Breath into your abdomen – allow your belly to rise and fall with each breath.
breathing and relaxing
Take time to focus on your breath each day. Concentrate on maintaining a continuous breath. Take full deep breaths into your abdomen. Breathe in through your nose and out your mouth. Keep your jaw relaxed. Allow your exhalation to be a letting go. Do not hold your breath or force/push it out as both require the tensing of muscles. You may allow a sound or sigh to come out as you exhale reminding your mind to release.
water
Drink clean pure water. At least eight 8 ounces of water each day. (Check with your physician if you have any health concerns.)
light
Take time to be in the sunlight every day. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
conscious relaxation/meditation
Give yourself the gift of letting your mind, body and spirit relax and rest. Take a few minutes every day to break from your usual routine and sit quietly and breathe.
exercise and stretch
Improve your physical and mental health with 15 to 20 minutes of exercise daily. Strength training and mind/body exercise like Tai Chi, yoga, Pilates, etc. are wonderful methods. (Check with your physician if you have any health concerns.)
get regular massage therapy
Massage is essential maintenance and nourishment for your body, mind and spirit. In addition to feeling great, massage gives us the opportunity to attain greater self awareness, improve our health and create a more balanced life. “Regular” massage may range from 2-3 times per week to 4 times per year, it all depends on you: your schedule, your budget and your reasons for receiving massage. Be sure to discuss your options with your therapist.
rest
Get adequate rest and sleep. Do your best to get 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
be positive
Negative thoughts and behaviors are habits, which can be changed through conscious effort and consistency.
smile
Smile every day. Smiling takes less muscular tension than frowning. When you smile you send a message to both yourself and others that you are happy. You will manifest more joy in your life.
be grateful
When you remind yourself of the things you are grateful for, you will train your mind and heart to look for the good in your life and those around you. You will experience more ease and peace.
Make it a great day!
